Development as Blueprint

A potential way to design a tissue engineered heart valve that grows is to model the development of human heart valves. We have performed extensive analysis of the ECM proteins, cells and genetics involved in heart valve development.

Producing the right matrix

Microarray of human heart valve development revealed key proteins involved in the formation of developing valves, particularly the elongation of valve leaflets. We are producing these proteins under GLP conditions in our laboratory in the Fraunhofer IGB Stuttgart. The proteins are produced using transfected CHO-cells selected for their ability to produce our specific proteins.

Tissue-Engineered Heart Valves

Putting it all together, we designed a base tissue engineered heart valve that mimics the biological and mechanical behavior of a developing heart valve.
